Virtual line inspection as a basis for ETCS planning on the Rostock–Berlin line

DB Netz AG Germany, 2021

180 kilometres of railway line and 11 level crossings on the Rostock–Berlin route will be equipped with ETCS by 2026. The project aims to increase the speed to 160 km/h. SIGNON is responsible for the scheduling for this modernisation project. To optimise the planning phase, the line has been recorded with video cameras and laser scanners with the SATengine mobile mapping system and made available to the planning team. The necessary planning data, such as track topology and signal locations, are therefore available digitally and can be checked from the user’s desk.

The point clouds make it possible to determine the locations of signals and other property within the infrastructure with a high degree of precision. Potential installation locations could be examined and determined right from the planning stage. This means numerous site inspections and manual measurements in the track area are no longer required.
